چکیده

Farmed insects can provide an alternative protein source for humans, livestock, and fish, while supporting adaptation to climate change, generating income smallholder farmers, reducing the negative impacts of conventional food production, especially in tropics. However, quantity, nutritional quality safety greatly relies on their feed intake. Tropical forages (grasses legumes) a valuable yet untapped several farmed insect species. In this perspective paper, we viewpoint how tropical support edible production. We also highlight potential forage-based diets over those using organic agricultural or urban by-product substrates, due versatility, low cost, lower risk microbial chemical hazards. The main bottlenecks relate dependence small number species, public policy market frameworks regarding use as food, industrial processes. This will serve interested stakeholders identifying urgent issues at research, ethical, marketing levels that prevent emergence new, insect-based value chains business models, nutritional, economic environmental benefits they promise.

There is an urgent need to increase the supply of sustainable protein for use in animal feed and the use of insect protein provides a potential alternative to protein crops and fishmeal. For example, fly larvae are highly compatible with use in animal feed containing much digestible protein with levels of key amino acids that are comparable with those found in high value alternatives such as so...
